"I say that we have been lied to: Hitler is not dead". Aime Cesaire
I recently finished a book titled 'Black Skin White Masks' where Frantz Fanon discusses colonial racism. What caught my attention was a passage where Fanon cites Aime Cesaire to argue that colonial racism is not the responsibility of a few individuals, but its perpetrators represent their civilization as a
whole. Likewise, the recent violence against Palestinians is the responsibility of Israeli society and also those who support Israeli violence and only see the Palestinians as the 'Other'.
When I turn on the TV and watch Israeli tanks and helicopters storm Palestinian towns killing hundreds of civilians, bulldozing scores of homes, and forcing a defenseless population to have no access to food or medicine or water, "I say that we have been lied to: Hitler is not dead"
When I read reports of people left to die on the streets, ambulances are shot at, and international relief agencies are denied access to help these victims, "I say that we have been lied to: Hitler is not dead"
When the cradle of Christianity is under siege by Israeli soldiers and thousands march in support of Israel "I say that we have been lied to: Hitler is not dead"
When I hear that democratically elected leaders support Israel's actions, and describe Sharon as "a man of peace": "I say that we have been lied to: Hitler is not dead"
When the American media abandons neutrality, takes on an Israeli hard line, and portrays Palestinians as less than human, "I say that we have been lied
to: Hitler is not dead"
When the victim's wounds are reported as 'self inflicted', "I say that we have been lied to: Hitler is not dead"
