Airs Thursday August 9
Thursday, August 9 from 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM (All time zones except Central where it airs at 7:00 PM. Check TV Guide for listings ) the History Channel as part of their History Undercover series hosted by Arthur Kent will air Cover Up: Attack on the U.S.S. Liberty.
At the height of the Six Day War at 1:59 PM on June 8th 1967, two Israeli Mirage fighters followed by Super-Mystere jets as well as torpedo boats attack the USS Liberty, a lightly armed electronic reconnaissance ship in international waters 13 miles off the Sinai Peninsula.
The attack rages for over an hour and when it is done, 34 American sailors have been killed and 171 injured.
To this day the attack has been shrouded in controversy....
What was the Liberty's mission?
Why was it so close to a hot war zone?
Why did Israel attack?
Why was the Liberty's crew told not to speak about it?
Why did the Israeli's label the attack a "mistake"?
And why is it the only major U.S. maritime catastrophe never investigated by the United States Congress?
Deep into the attack, the captain and crew realized that the aggressor was their ally, Israel, who claimed they couldn't identify the ship as American.
Hear from crew members what happened that day and why they feel that the attack was intentional and that both governments covered up the true details.
